June 2010 The 'History of Freak Shows' series is well under way now with five paintings finished. It will probably take me most of this year to paint all the researched ideas. The fascination with people living with deformaties is still alive with TV programs like Abnormal Bodies and the Mermaid Girl. Freak Shows and Side Shows were officially closed down in 1973 in the USA. From 21 - 27 June I will on an Art promoting trip to New York and will also be visiting the (1900's circus boss) P.T Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, CT. I am pleased to announcee that in May 2010 my donated paintings helped raise £1500 at a Silent Auction at the London Business School. I am part of a Contemporary Folk Artists Colective. If you would like to be invited to our regular exhibitions send me an email.
February 2010 This year's subject is about the 'History of Freak Shows'. I was inspired to paint about the freak shows after visiting an exhibition where I saw old photo's of people with deformities who worked in circusses and side shows. I have bought some very interseting books like Freaks: We who are not as Others by Daniel P. Mannix. and the autobiography of P.T Barnum who was a showman from the barnum and Bailey circus. New paintings will appear on this website when I have finished the research and paintings for this subject. July 2009 Karin has finished working on a new series of oil paintings and collage. She has been researching the' History of Psychiatry'. The material she has found has been to great inspiration for new work. It has taken Karin two months to research this new subject. During this time she visited the Wellcome Medical library, the Henry V111 exhibition in the British Library, the archives at Bedlam Psychiatric Hospital in South London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A short series of paintings is planned about 'Famous Mad People' in which King George 111 will feature as well as paintings about medieval sollutions for madness: Thy shall eat a roasted mouse to heale thy person! New work will regularly appear on this website!

This amazing website was made by Karin van der Plas – Charity Artwork The Hamlin Fistula Hospital EthiopiaIn order to support women in Africa, my exhibition in London in 2008 donated to the Hamlin Hospital, Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. The hospital specialises in helping women who have internal injuries caused by obstructed labour. Because women marry young, aged 14, they have babies before their bodies are ready and they are sometimes in labour for up to 5 days and the babies do not survive. When the dead baby finally is born, the woman is left with terrible internal injuries. The injuries are to the bladder and to the rectum and women are incontinent. Because of the smell, often husbands leave the women and they are left alone with the condition for up to 20 years. If the women are lucky they are taken or found by the people from the Fistula Hospital. A simple operation is all that is needed, however sometimes the injuries are so bad women are permanently disabled. Donations help more women to reach this hospital and women have a chance to live a normal life again.
The music on this website is from my favorite Australian band 'The Sunnyboys'. You can see and hear more of this band on http://www.myspace.com/kidsindust
